Isobutane
Isobutane illustrates how a hydrocarbon can move heat through a refrigeration cycle without being used as fuel.
Isobutane can help cool a refrigerator without being burned or consumed. Known as R-600a, it circulates through a system that uses evaporation, compression, condensation, and pressure reduction to move heat. Its branched carbon skeleton distinguishes it from n-butane, designated R-600, despite their shared molecular formula. The machine must reject both heat removed from the cabinet and energy supplied to operate the cycle. Consequently, refrigerant identity alone cannot establish efficiency: components, controls, and conditions matter too. Experimental research and system simulations provide different evidence about that performance. Isobutane's flammability must also be addressed by equipment design. Its refrigeration role illustrates how physical changes can be engineered into repeated heat transport while the working molecule retains its chemical identity throughout normal circulation.
